Emanuel Leutze’s iconic 1851 painting, “Washington Crossing the Delaware,” has become a symbol of American resolve during the Revolution. While the meme captures the spirit of General Washington’s daring crossing of the Delaware River on that chilly Christmas night, it oversimplifies the circumstances that led to this bold move. Washington didn’t choose this strategy because it was foolproof; rather, it was a last resort driven by necessity.
The backdrop to this famous event was the challenging year of 1776. Despite the signing of the Declaration of Independence that summer, the reality for the American Revolutionary War was far from triumphant. As December 1776 approached, General Washington and his troops were grappling with defeats, retreating from New York City, and enduring harsh winter conditions camped along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania.
The Continental Army was demoralized, facing bitter cold, worn-out clothing, and scarce food supplies. Many soldiers were eagerly anticipating the end of their enlistments in January 1777, hoping to leave behind the hardships of military service. Recognizing the need to uplift his troops’ spirits and salvage the year’s end on a positive note, Washington devised a plan for a surprise attack on a garrison of around 1,400 Hessian mercenaries near Trenton, New Jersey.
The objective was clear: a swift victory to boost morale and potentially attract new recruits in the coming year. After careful deliberation with his officers, Washington determined that the best time for the assault would be Christmas night into the early morning of December 26.
Far from a casual act of aggression, Washington’s Delaware Crossing was a strategic move born out of the harsh realities and pressing needs of a struggling Continental Army. It wasn’t about a willingness to take extreme measures; it was about a commander making a calculated decision in desperate times.
