PHOENIX — The Texas Rangers have etched their name in history as World Series champions for the first time in franchise history. Their remarkable journey saw them survive Arizona ace Zac Gallen’s no-hit bid, receive a gutsy performance from starter Nathan Eovaldi, and unleash their powerful bats in the late innings, resulting in a thrilling 5-0 victory in Game 5 at Chase Field on Wednesday night.

Ending MLB’s longest title drought among teams without a championship, the Rangers, originally an expansion team known as the Washington Senators in 1961 before relocating to Arlington and rebranding in ’72, displayed their resilience in an intense contest that remained ultra-competitive for eight innings.

Just one night after exploding for 11 runs, including 10 in the second and third innings, the Rangers found themselves held scoreless until the seventh inning. It was then that Mitch Garver’s RBI single brought the newly crowned two-time World Series MVP, Corey Seager, home to break the scoreless deadlock. The Rangers further capitalized on an untimely Alek Thomas fielding error in a four-run ninth inning, highlighted by Marcus Semien’s two-run homer.

Twelve years ago, the Rangers experienced the heartbreak of falling one strike short of a championship—twice. This time, they were determined not to let the opportunity slip away. Their remarkable road show, going an unprecedented 11-0 away from Arlington, culminated in a championship celebration.

“I think we took that to heart. We weren’t going to let up until the last out was made,” said catcher Jonah Heim, who was behind the plate when right-hander Josh Sborz, instead of closer José Leclerc, struck out Ketel Marte to clinch the title. “I’m so proud of this team. We fought through adversity, injuries, and we came out on top. I don’t know what else to say.”

Gallen and Eovaldi engaged in a classic World Series-worthy pitchers’ duel, providing a welcome contrast to the bullpen-driven spectacle of the previous night. Both pitchers demonstrated their mastery in different ways.

For Gallen, it was an efficient, almost effortless string of outs. He became the first pitcher in World Series history to pitch six no-hit innings with his team facing elimination.

In contrast, Eovaldi had to navigate his way through multiple baserunners, conceding four hits and five walks in six innings. However, the Diamondbacks failed to capitalize, going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranding all nine runners. At a crucial juncture in the third inning, the Diamondbacks had two runners on base with no outs when Gabriel Moreno, their No. 3 hitter, decided to lay down a questionable sacrifice bunt, but it resulted in nothing.

In summary, the Diamondbacks let Eovaldi escape from tight situations, leaving themselves exposed to anything short of perfection by their ace.

“I kind of joked around that I didn’t know how many rabbits I had left in my hat,” Eovaldi said. “I didn’t really help myself out in some of those situations. Other times, they put together quality at-bats and were able to find the hole. A lot of the credit goes to Jonah back there behind the plate. He called a great game. We were on the same page for the most part. We were able to come out on top. That was the main thing.”

Gallen’s no-hit bid finally gave way in the seventh inning, starting in an unexpected manner. Seager broke up the no-hitter with a softly hit grounder to the opposite side—a play that would have been harmless had third baseman Evan Longoria not been shifted toward shortstop. The ball reached the outfield grass, breathing new life into the Rangers’ hopes.
