Lakers Rumors: Taurean Prince a Strong Contender to Start Alongside LeBron and Anthony Davis

With NBA training camps now in full swing, several teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, have yet to finalize their starting lineups for the upcoming season.
It’s no surprise that LeBron James and Anthony Davis are locked in as starters for the Purple and Gold. However, there is considerable buzz around the recently acquired Taurean Prince, who is being seriously considered as a potential starter alongside the dynamic duo, as reported by The Athletic’s Jovan Buha.
While D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves are expected to join James and Davis in the starting lineup, the final starting spot seems to be up for grabs, with Prince facing competition from Jarred Vanderbilt and Rui Hachimura.
Buha assessed the merits of each candidate for this position:
“Each candidate has a different argument. Of the three, Vanderbilt stands out as the best perimeter defender, addressing a clear need for the starters, while also contributing solid rebounding and infectious energy. Hachimura brings stability and athleticism, excelling in finishing plays in the paint and midrange, in addition to defending against bigger opponents. Prince, by far, boasts the best shooting ability, a crucial factor when playing alongside James and Davis in the frontcourt.”
The Lakers secured Taurean Prince on a one-year, $4.5 million deal in July, marking his move from the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he spent the last two seasons.
Prince appeared in 54 games for the Timberwolves last season, although he only started four of them. His last full-time starting role was back in the 2019-20 campaign. His statistics for the season were respectable, with averages of 9.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. He also demonstrated efficient shooting percentages of 46.7 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from beyond the arc.
Despite Prince’s strong candidacy, Rui Hachimura has also captured attention following his impressive playoff performance in 2023, which played a pivotal role in leading the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals.
During the postseason, Hachimura averaged 12.2 points and 3.6 rebounds in 16 games, showcasing remarkable shooting percentages of 55.7 percent from the field and 46.7 percent from three-point range. Although he primarily served as a reserve, Hachimura’s ability to excel as a starter during his earlier career with the Washington Wizards is undeniable.
As the Lakers aim to rebound from a disappointing finish in the 2022-23 season, they enter the 2023-24 season with heightened expectations, striving to secure another championship during the James-Davis era.
