The Texas Rangers find themselves just four victories away from claiming their inaugural World Series title, but standing firmly in their path are the Arizona Diamondbacks.
In a thrilling Game 7 of the National League Championship Series, the Diamondbacks emerged victorious over the Philadelphia Phillies, securing their ticket to the World Series for the second time. Their previous appearance was in 2001 when they faced the New York Yankees, prevailing in a grueling seven-game showdown.
The Rangers, on the other hand, have made it to the grand stage of the World Series for the third time and their first since their memorable run in 2011. Despite their previous attempts, a World Series title has eluded them thus far.
This time, in a refreshing change of fortune, the Rangers will enjoy home-field advantage for Games 1 and 2, as well as Games 6 and 7 if required. Game 1 is scheduled to kick off at 7:03 p.m. on Friday at Globe Life Field.
In a remarkable twist of fate, both the Rangers and the DBacks exhibited their resilience by clinching Games 6 and 7 on the road, marking an unprecedented achievement in MLB postseason history.
During the regular season, the Diamondbacks managed to secure three out of four victories against the Rangers, which included a two-game series in Phoenix on August 21-22. Additionally, the teams split two games in Arlington in early May.
Of note, the DBacks’ bench coach since 2022 has been former Rangers manager Jeff Banister, who played an instrumental role in leading the club to consecutive AL West titles in 2015 and 2016.
While at first glance, there might not appear to be a significant historical connection between Arizona and Texas, a certain event looms in memory. The Rangers expressed their displeasure with the Diamondbacks’ approach in treating their regular-season finale against the Houston Astros as an exhibition game. Despite the playoff fates of both teams having been decided, the AL West title was still at stake, contested between the Astros and the Rangers. The Astros secured a decisive victory to sweep the three-game series, while the Rangers suffered a 1-0 loss to Seattle. Ultimately, the Rangers and Astros shared identical 90-72 records, but the Astros claimed the AL West title due to a tiebreaker based on their head-to-head advantage.
This particular handling of the regular-season finale by the DBacks sparked discussions, with Rangers’ manager Bruce Bochy raising the matter in the days that followed.
