‘We Are Black and Catholic’: 2024 Joint Conference Unites Clergy and Religious in Louisville for Synodal Action

The 2024 Joint Conference brought together U.S. Black Catholic clergy, religious brothers, women religious, deacons, and seminarians in Louisville, Kentucky, to focus on synodality and strengthen their collective mission within the Church.

During the jubilarian Mass on July 30 at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, Fr. Patrick Winbush, OSB, passionately declared, “We are proud people. We are strong people. We are gifted people. We are spiritual people. We are Black and Catholic, and nobody can take that away from us!” His words encapsulated the spirit of the event, which annually gathers Black Catholic leaders from across the nation for fellowship and important discussions.

Held from Sunday to Wednesday, this year’s conference marked the first gathering since 2022. The theme of synodality was particularly timely, aligning with Pope Francis’ vision of a listening Church that responds to those on the margins.

For Black Catholics in the United States, who have often felt like an unheard voice, this conference celebrated their achievements in ministry and perseverance while acknowledging the ongoing work required to further their mission.
