Hunter Schafer on Rejecting the Trans Activist Label: “I’m Just a Tr***y Who’s Famous”

Euphoria star Hunter Schafer has once again expressed her discomfort with being labeled a transgender activist, despite her prominent role as Jules Vaughn, a trans teen, in the popular show. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Schafer shared her thoughts on the label, saying, “I just happen to be a person who’s part of a marginalized community in the public eye, and people love to call me an activist. No, I’m just a tr***y who’s famous.”

Schafer has been vocal about her reluctance to have the “transgender” label precede her identity as an actress. Earlier this year, she mentioned that she finds it “demeaning” to be referred to as a “trans actress” and has turned down several roles where she would be playing trans characters. “I just want to be a girl and finally move on,” she explained.

Despite her desire to move away from the label, Schafer acknowledges the responsibility that comes with her visibility. “I know I’m one of the most famous trans people in media right now and feel a sense of responsibility, and maybe a little bit of guilt, for not being more of a spokesperson,” she admitted. “But, ultimately, I believe that not making it a centerpiece to what I’m doing will allow me to get further.”

Although Schafer may shy away from the activist label, she first gained national attention in 2016 as the youngest complainant in a lawsuit challenging a North Carolina bill that restricted trans people from using bathrooms that match their gender identity.

Since Euphoria, Schafer has portrayed several cisgender characters, including Tigris Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Gretchen in the psychological horror film Cuckoo.

Hunter Schafer’s latest film, Cuckoo, is currently in U.S. cinemas and is set to be released in the UK on August 23.
