Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump gestures as he is surrounded by U.S. Secret Service agents on July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pa.

Donald Trump’s defiant response to the attempt on his life on July 13 mirrored another former Republican president who was shot while seeking a return to the White House. Trump, who says a bullet pierced his right ear, emerged from a scrum of Secret Service agents bloodied, shaking his fist in the air and shouting “Fight!” to his supporters. The powerful image was captured in a photographic tableau that was reportedly already being printed on T-shirts ahead of this week’s Republican National Convention.

The Trump campaign will undoubtedly use Trump’s pugnacious response to the shooting as a rallying cry. As Republican strategist Mike Murphy told POLITICO Magazine, “The raised fist will become the iconic symbol of the convention.”
