Jesse Chavez Deserves All-Star Consideration, and Braves Teammates Are Making Sure We Know

ATLANTA — Jesse Chavez isn’t campaigning for a spot on the All-Star team, nor is he taking the bait when a reporter suggests that he’s pitched well enough to deserve the honor, which would be a first in his lengthy career.
However, his Braves teammates are championing the cause for the veteran right-hander to be selected for the July 16 All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas. On Tuesday, some players donned new political campaign-styled T-shirts featuring a cartoon depiction of a bespectacled Chavez with slogans like “Chavez ‘24” and “Jesse Chavez for All-Star,” along with the tagline “Get Coach to Texas!”
“Coach” is Chavez’s nickname in the Braves clubhouse, where he’s revered and has become something of a legend in recent seasons, thanks to his stellar performances with the Braves, contrasting with less successful stints with other teams that released or traded him back to Atlanta.
Chavez’s teammates are making it clear: they believe he’s earned his All-Star moment.
