By winning Game 5 of the Finals against Dallas (88-106) on Monday, the Celtics clinched their 18th NBA title. This victory places them ahead of their eternal rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers.

It’s been 16 years since the Boston Celtics last raised an NBA championship banner. This is a significant gap for this historic franchise, which has been a powerhouse in the North American Basketball league since winning its first title in 1957. On Monday, June 17, the team coached by Joe Mazzulla ended this drought. The Celtics won the fifth game of the finals against the Dallas Mavericks (88-106) to claim the 18th NBA title in their history.

With this victory in Boston, the Celtics reclaim their status as the NBA’s most successful franchise, surpassing the Los Angeles Lakers (17 titles). The Lakers had tied with them in 2020, during the atypical finals played in the Disney World “bubble” due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
