Skull and Bones Review — Aye’d Skip This One
February 22, 2024
When I sat down to play Skull and Bones, I did so with an open mind and a spark of excitement. Given my fondness for Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, I was hopeful that Ubisoft would bring some of that naval combat magic to this new pirate MMO. Unfortunately, I was sorely mistaken.
Skull and Bones isn’t a direct sequel to Black Flag, but I expected it to build on the lessons learned from that game. Sadly, it doesn’t even come close.
As someone deeply fascinated by the Golden Age of Piracy, which spans from around 1650 to 1730, I was eager to dive into a game that could capture the complex lives of pirates—men who turned against their leaders for reasons ranging from oppressive conditions to the lure of treasure. Pirates have historically been depicted as both villains and heroes, and I hoped Skull and Bones would explore this rich tapestry. Instead, the game reduces piracy to a tedious, bare-bones naval simulator.
From the start, Skull and Bones feels lackluster. The action is limited to long-distance ship battles and the collection of materials to upgrade your ship. This might be acceptable in a multiplayer game that requires progression to maintain interest, but Skull and Bones fails to make any of this engaging.
Naval Gameplay—And Nothing Else
Your first task is to collect materials to build your ship. At first glance, this seems promising. You might expect to disembark and gather resources from islands, especially since the game features a robust character creator. Surely Ubisoft wants you to see your character in action, right? Wrong. Gathering materials is done exclusively from your ship, and apart from a few island hubs, you’ll never set foot on land.
This means the bulk of your gameplay is confined to naval mechanics. You might argue that this is the essence of Skull and Bones. However, if Ubisoft intended to create an unparalleled pirate experience, they missed the mark completely. Sailing and trading are significant aspects of pirate life, but they don’t translate to exciting gameplay here. The introductory missions are so monotonous that by the time you think you’re making progress, you realize you’re in for another couple of hours of drudgery before you get to the action.
Lackluster World and Characters
What could salvage a gameplay grind is a captivating world with intriguing characters. Unfortunately, Skull and Bones offers neither. The world feels empty, and the characters are utterly forgettable. I couldn’t name a single character from the game if I tried. The only character that stood out was the one I created, thanks to the inclusive and interactive character creator.
In conclusion, Skull and Bones is a game that squanders its potential. It had the opportunity to bring the rich, complex world of piracy to life but instead offers a dull and uninspired experience. If you’re considering setting sail with Skull and Bones, I’d advise you to steer clear.
