The Boys Season 4 Review: Politics As Usual
The satire remains sharp in The Boys’ fourth season, but storytelling cracks are beginning to show.
By Alec Bojalad | June 11, 2024
Since its debut in the summer of 2019, Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys has been a cultural powerhouse, offering a necessary critique of the MCU-ification of superheroes and the corporate adulation it fostered. Unlike Marvel’s self-aware Deadpool, The Boys embraced the task with a perfect blend of satire and shock value, presenting a near 1:1 satire of the superhero industry, complete with altered names, superpowers, and a lot of graphic content.
This increasingly loose adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic series has delivered three exceptional seasons of commentary on the superhero industrial complex, mirroring real-world issues. However, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s cultural dominance wanes, so does the unyielding vigor of The Boys. Season 4 marks a noticeable decline, showcasing the first real signs of fatigue in the series.
Make no mistake, The Boys season 4 is not bad by any means, but it is the weakest installment so far. The satire retains its edge, but the narrative begins to falter in significant ways. Longtime fans who argued for a tighter focus on the series’ endgame will find validation, while those of us who believe in the endless potential of TV storytelling might feel a bit disheartened.
