Stewart-Haas Racing to Cease Cup Operations After 2024 Season
Updated: May 28, 2024, 5:24 p.m. ET
By Bob Pockrass | FOX NASCAR Insider
Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), a powerhouse in NASCAR since its formation in 2009, will close its four-car Cup operation following the 2024 season. The team, co-owned by Gene Haas and Tony Stewart, has achieved significant success, including two Cup titles and 69 wins.
The Decision to Close
Gene Haas and Tony Stewart have shifted their focus to other ventures in recent years. Haas is heavily involved with his Formula 1 team, which has faced challenges, and Stewart has launched an NHRA drag-racing team, where his wife drove last year and Stewart himself is competing this year.
The decision to close comes as SHR has struggled recently, compounded by the loss of major sponsors Smithfield and Anheuser-Busch and the impending end of significant support from Ford. Maintaining a four-car operation without this backing would be unsustainable.
“We have made the difficult decision to close Stewart-Haas Racing at the conclusion of the 2024 season,” Stewart and Haas said in a joint statement. “This decision was not made lightly or quickly. Racing requires unwavering commitment and vast resources. It’s time to pass the torch.”
Selling the Charters
SHR holds four charters, which are essential for participating in the Cup Series. Sources indicate that three charters will likely be sold to existing Cup organizations: one to Front Row Motorsports, one to 23XI Racing, and one to Trackhouse Racing. The destination of the fourth charter remains uncertain.
A Legacy of Success
SHR began with Haas operating Haas CNC Racing in 2002. In 2009, Haas offered Stewart half the team, which led to the creation of Stewart-Haas Racing. The team quickly found success, winning championships in 2011 with Stewart and in 2014 with Kevin Harvick. Their last Cup win was in 2022 with Harvick, who retired after the 2023 season.
“We’re proud of all the wins and championships we’ve earned since 2009,” Stewart and Haas stated. “But even more special is the culture we built and the friendships we forged. Our commitment to our personnel, partners, and fans will remain strong through the season finale at Phoenix.”
Impact on Drivers and Employees
The closure impacts several Cup drivers, including Chase Briscoe, Noah Gragson, Josh Berry, and Ryan Preece, as well as Xfinity Series drivers Cole Custer and Riley Herbst. Here’s a brief look at their potential futures:
- Chase Briscoe: Currently 16th in the Cup standings, Briscoe is a strong candidate for Wood Brothers Racing next year, with Harrison Burton’s position under scrutiny.
- Noah Gragson, Josh Berry, and Ryan Preece: These drivers will need to seek new opportunities in the Cup Series.
- Cole Custer and Riley Herbst: Competing in the Xfinity Series, they too will be looking for new teams.
SHR has committed to supporting their employees during this transition, helping them find new opportunities beyond the 2024 race season.
