PHILADELPHIA – The No. 1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s lacrosse team secured their second consecutive NCAA national title on Monday, defeating No. 7 Maryland with a commanding 15-5 victory at Lincoln Financial Field. This triumph defends their 2023 championship and reinforces their dominance in collegiate lacrosse.
Notre Dame’s back-to-back titles mark the first time in a decade that a team has won consecutive men’s lacrosse NCAA national championships. They are only the ninth team in history to achieve this remarkable feat.
This championship is the second in the program’s history, both under the leadership of Baumer Family Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Kevin Corrigan. The team’s defense was exceptional, tying a program record for the fewest goals allowed in an NCAA Tournament game, and their 10-goal winning margin ranks as the second-largest in Notre Dame’s postseason history.
Chris Kavanagh earned the title of NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player, scoring five goals in the final, tying the program record for the most goals in an NCAA Tournament game. Pat Kavanagh, Liam Entenmann, Shawn Lyght, Devon McLane, and Ben Ramsey also made the All-Tournament Team, showcasing Notre Dame’s depth of talent.
Liam Entenmann was phenomenal in goal, making 16 saves while allowing only five goals. Pat Kavanagh set a new Notre Dame record for assists in an NCAA Tournament game with six assists during the championship.
The Irish midfield was a powerhouse, with eight different midfielders contributing to the scoreline.
How It Happened
Despite Maryland scoring the first two goals, Notre Dame quickly found their rhythm, netting five of the last six goals in the first quarter to take a 5-3 lead. The Fighting Irish continued their dominant performance throughout the game, securing a decisive victory and their place in history as repeat champions.
