Jalen Brunson: The Superstar Knicks Fans Have Longed For

One of the most exhilarating sports narratives I’ve had the pleasure of covering for this magazine undoubtedly belonged to Jeremy Lin during his remarkable fortnight in 2012. (Reflecting the thrilling sentiment of the time, a headline read, “Fifteen Reasons to Remain Unapologetically Over the Moon About Jeremy Lin.” I could have easily penned 200.) Amidst various theories surrounding the phenomenon of Linsanity — from the Knicks’ historic struggles to Lin’s ethnicity and Ivy League background — one conclusion I reached then still resonates: Lin represented the Knicks’ first homegrown sensation in decades.

Throughout their tumultuous history, particularly under the stewardship of Jim Dolan since 1999, the Knicks have often pursued expensive, high-profile stars, usually far past their prime. Unfortunately, these pursuits have often yielded disappointment, with superstar signings failing to rejuvenate the franchise. Remember the time LeBron James donned a Knicks jersey on a magazine cover? Yet, even more disheartening were the times when these gambles paid off, leading to disastrous decisions like signing or trading for the likes of Joakim Noah, Jerome James, Eddy Curry, Steve Francis, Antonio McDyess, and Andrea Bargnani, among others, ultimately setting the team back for years. The Knicks’ endeavors to purchase success externally have frequently backfired, highlighting the need for an authentic, homegrown talent to reignite the team’s fortunes.
