“There Will Be Blood
Bedbugs, the silent invaders, have infiltrated every nook and cranny of Toronto, sparing no institution or abode. From the hallowed halls of our libraries to the bustling offices, schools, hospitals, and even our sanctuaries of rest—the hotels and homes—they have spread like an insidious plague. This is the story of an eternal struggle, a costly and often traumatic battle against these bloodsucking parasites that have invaded our lives, leaving devastation in their wake.

In the spring of 2017, I embarked on a journey into the depths of a grubby basement apartment in the Beaches area. As I stepped inside, the musty scent of turned earth and stale sock greeted me, a harbinger of perpetual dampness. Despite its gloomy ambiance and lack of amenities—a desk-free space and a shower that doubled as a cat’s domain—I found myself considering it as my new refuge. The allure of escaping a doomed relationship and the promise of affordability in a city notorious for its soaring costs swayed my judgment. Moreover, the industrial-boho charm of exposed brick walls and concrete floors, coupled with the convenience of an in-unit washer and dryer, hinted at the potential for comfort amidst the chaos. And then, there was the location—a mere stone’s throw from the sandy shores of the lake, offering solace amidst the urban hustle and bustle. In a moment of audacious optimism, I convinced myself that I could adapt and thrive in this less-than-ideal abode.”
