German memory culture, often lauded for its efforts in confronting the country’s dark past, is viewed by some as little more than empty self-congratulatory propaganda.

As a Jewish activist advocating for Palestinian solidarity in Berlin, I have come to question the sincerity of Germany’s supposed reckoning with its history.

My personal connection to Germany is rooted in my family’s tragic past. My grandmother was a Holocaust survivor who fled Cologne during World War II, losing many loved ones to the horrors of the Holocaust. Years later, I made the decision to relocate to Germany, seeking a sense of intergenerational healing for both myself and my grandmother. Learning the language and immersing myself in the culture, I hoped to find solace in a country that had seemingly confronted and atoned for its past sins.

However, my optimism was short-lived. Despite Germany’s efforts to cultivate a memory culture, I have come to realize that the facade of progress belies deeper issues of ongoing discrimination and injustice. The recent rise in pro-Palestinian demonstrations, met with counter-protests from pro-Israel factions, highlights the continued presence of anti-Semitic sentiment within German society.

As a Jewish activist, I am confronted with the uncomfortable reality that my struggle for Palestinian liberation is met with resistance and hostility from those who claim to champion human rights. The insidious connection between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism further complicates the discourse, making it difficult to navigate the complexities of identity and solidarity.

In grappling with the contradictions of German memory culture and the enduring legacy of anti-Semitism, I am reminded of the importance of challenging prevailing narratives and advocating for justice on behalf of marginalized communities. Only through honest reflection and meaningful action can we hope to truly confront the ghosts of the past and forge a more equitable future.
