Villanova’s hopes for a triumphant finish in the 2023-24 season were dashed in the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament
(WBIT) championship game as they faced a second-half collapse against Illinois. Despite a valiant effort, the Wildcats (22-13) fell short with a final score of 71-57, marking the end of their season.
In a hard-fought battle at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Villanova struggled to maintain their momentum as Illinois surged ahead, pouring in 42 points in the second half. Junior standout Lucy Olsen led the Wildcats with 22 points, but her efforts were not enough to overcome Illinois’ dominant performance.
Despite Olsen’s impressive performance, shooting 8-for-25 from the field and 1-for-9 from beyond the arc, Illinois’ Makira Cook stole the spotlight with a game-high 27 points, including an impressive 5-for-6 shooting from three-point range.
Though the loss is undoubtedly disappointing, Villanova showcased determination and resilience throughout the season, leaving a legacy of hard work and dedication on the court.
