Zen-Y Guy: Jim Carrey’s Secret to Staying Calm While Reprising Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Hollywood superstar Jim Carrey is back to his zany antics as he reprises his role as the super-villain Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Known for his dynamic portrayals of characters like the masked Stanley Ipkiss and the pet detective Ace Ventura, Carrey, now 60, reveals that off-camera, he has discovered a sense of zen through meditation.
“I’m a big meditator,” he shares. “Meditation has had a profound impact on how I perceive things and how my mind operates in my day-to-day life.”
“When I meditate, it feels like my soul expands beyond the confines of my body. I feel connected to everything. There’s a sense of divinity in all of it.”
These sentiments may come as a surprise from the man once synonymous with catchphrases like “Somebody stop me!” from his breakout role in The Mask (1994) alongside Cameron Diaz, or his unforgettable portrayal of Lloyd Christmas in Dumb & Dumber the same year.
However, Carrey’s career has always been marked by unexpected turns, including his forays into dramatic roles in films such as Man on the Moon (1999).
Returning to familiar territory in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey reflects on the positive impact of the first film and his easy decision to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik.
“People could watch the first movie with their families, both in theaters and later at home during the pandemic,” he explains. “That was incredibly gratifying for me.”
As he steps back into the shoes of the mad scientist, Carrey embraces the whimsical yet chaotic world of CGI and eccentric characters, albeit with a touch of self-awareness.
“It’s always a blast to play characters like Dr. Robotnik, but I have to dial back my own tendencies toward megalomania to fully inhabit the role,” he jokes.
With his background in stand-up comedy and a career marked by versatility, Carrey remains the perfect foil to the mischievous blue hedgehog in the beloved movie series inspired by Sega’s iconic video game.
