“Legend,” “One Love”

The depiction of Bob Marley in the latest biopic continues the trend of simplifying the complex soul rebel into yet another dorm-room poster icon. Much like the immensely popular “Legend,” “One Love” offers a highly curated portrayal of the reggae pioneer, catering to a specific audience.

Authored by Jack Hamilton, the biopic critique questions the intended audience of such films, pointing out the inherent challenge of balancing the desires of die-hard fans seeking authenticity with the need to attract newcomers and satisfy the expectations of the musician’s estate. Unfortunately, many biopics fail to strike this balance effectively.

“One Love,” produced by Marley’s widow, Rita, and some of his children, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and featuring Kingsley Ben-Adir as Marley, attempts to appeal to a broad audience. However, despite Ben-Adir’s commendable performance, the film struggles to capture Marley’s essence, both in appearance and sound. Lashana Lynch shines as Rita Marley, bringing depth to her character despite the limitations of the script.

Ultimately, while “One Love” may resonate with some viewers, it falls short of providing a comprehensive portrayal of Bob Marley’s life and legacy, opting instead for a more marketable and accessible depiction.
