Organized crime takes a grim toll, accounting for a staggering 50% of homicides in Latin America and the Caribbean, the region with the highest global homicide rate, as per the recent 4th Global Study on Homicide by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The study unveiled that Latin America and the Caribbean bear the highest proportion of homicides linked to organized crime across the world. Disturbingly, eight out of the top 10 countries with the highest homicide rates globally are nestled in this region. The average homicide rates, based on 2021 statistics, stand at 9.3 per 100,000 for South America, 16.9 per 100,000 for Central America, and 12.7 per 100,000 for the Caribbean.

The study reveals that the surge in violence is attributed to clashes among criminal factions armed with easy access to firearms. Government crackdowns, though severe, show mixed results in quelling the bloodshed.

The report highlights the correlation between escalating homicidal violence and the presence of multiple criminal groups, emphasizing the intricate networks of drug trafficking organizations, street gangs, and militias operating across the continent. This creates an environment where violence rapidly intensifies as rival groups vie for dominance, particularly evident in fragmented criminal ecosystems such as Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago.

The expansion of the international drug trade, especially the surge in cocaine production in Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia, has spurred violence between local and international criminal factions in neighboring Ecuador. Similarly, Costa Rica has witnessed a spike in homicides linked to drug gang conflicts, notably in the struggle for control of Moín port in Limón province, a crucial cocaine transport hub to Europe.

The study underscores the complex interplay of factors, urging comprehensive strategies to address the intricate web of organized crime networks and their impact on regional violence.
