Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo shared an unexpected childhood dream

Playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite his current identity as an ultra-talented musician comfortable behind a mic stand, Cuomo once aspired to don the black and gold jersey of his favorite NFL team.

Recalling his Steelers fandom during the team’s remarkable run in the late ’70s and early ’80s, Cuomo confessed to Audacy at the NFL Draft, “I was a big fan of the Steelers back when they had that amazing run at the end of the ’70s, early ’80s. I had every intention of joining the Steelers. Then, by the time I got to high school, though, I realized I wasn’t going to cut it physically. I was going to turn out to be very small. It took me a year or two, and then I finally figured out I can be a rock star and still hear the cheer of the crowd and get some of the same thrills. It turned out for the best.”

Cuomo’s revelation places him among a list of celebrities, including Snoop Dogg and Impractical Jokers’ Sal Vulcano, who, despite not hailing from Pittsburgh, passionately support the Steelers.

In the illustrious 1970s, the Steelers stood as the NFL’s most triumphant franchise, clinching four Super Bowls in six seasons from 1975-80. Their remarkable achievement of securing back-to-back Super Bowls twice (1975-76 and 1979-80) remains unmatched, with only seven teams in NFL history, including the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, and Green Bay Packers, achieving this feat. The Steelers, however, hold the unique distinction of accomplishing it twice.
