Mysterious ‘Witch Bottles’ Surface on Beach, but Researchers Hesitate to Unseal Them

A Texas researcher, Jace Tunnell from the Harte Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, is cautious about unraveling the secrets hidden within the mysterious ‘witch bottles’ that have been consistently washing ashore along the Gulf of Mexico.

Tunnell recently discovered the eighth ‘witch bottle’ on the beach near Corpus Christi, Texas, adding to the collection found since 2017. These bottles contain various items, such as vegetation, herbs, metal nails, hair, or even bodily fluids. Similar containers have been unearthed in the UK, hidden within walls or buried underground.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, a prevalent belief in witches and their alleged power to inflict illnesses through spells led people to take measures against these curses. The McGill University Office of Science and Society explains that individuals sought protection by trapping the malevolent spells in a ‘witch bottle.’ Properly prepared, these bottles could supposedly reflect the spell, causing distress to the witch and compelling them to lift the curse, enabling the victim to recover.
