βIt was electricβ: Michigan football fans go wild after national championship win
ANN ARBOR, MI – With a football fandom spanning 52 years, Gene and Rick Sperling attribute their enduring passion to the serendipitous meeting of their parents, Larry and Doris, during their freshman years on the train to Ann Arbor over half a century ago.
Recently mourning the loss of their father, the brothers sought proximity during the Wolverines’ first shot at a national championship since 1997. Seated near the front row of the screen streaming the game in The Michigan Theater in downtown Ann Arbor, they reflected on their wish that their parents could witness this historic moment.
Gene, a former economic advisor to Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, expressed the sentiment, saying, “We just wish they were here for this one.”
From jubilant students at South University bars to ecstatic residents downtown, Michigan fans let their emotions flow after the Wolverines’ triumphant 34-13 victory over Washington on Jan. 8 in Houston for the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
Joseph Miller, attending the theater watch party with over 1,000 spectators, exclaimed, “Itβs the greatest day of my entire life,” expressing gratitude for the unique experience.
Reflecting on the significance of the game, senior Kate Zeising, a third-generation Wolverine, shared her excitement at being able to witness a national championship during her senior year at the historic Brown Jug, a popular student spot founded in 1936.
“Even when we havenβt had great seasons, Iβve always been a fan,” she said. “Being here for my senior year, being able to watch a national championship at such a historic bar in Ann Arbor has been a really incredible experience.”
Senior Esha Kaul echoed the sentiment, expressing gratitude for the camaraderie of fellow senior friends and exuding confidence in the Wolverines with a prediction of a 50-0 blowout. As Michigan took a 17-3 lead in the first half, her confidence grew.
“We work hard, play hard, and weβre confident in our team,” she affirmed.
Amidst the fervor, senior Emma Lau led the bar in a spirited rendition of the national anthem. Locals, eager to secure a prime spot, camped out at the bar several hours in advance, exemplified by Dexter’s Patrick Kaercher, who arrived at 2:30 p.m. to grab the last two-topper in the place before the kickoff at a little after 7:30 p.m.
