At long last, the Texas Rangers are World Series champions
After more than half a century since relocating to Arlington in 1972, the Texas Rangers have, at last, clinched their inaugural World Series championship.
With a commanding 3-1 lead and a chance to secure the title on foreign turf, the Texas Rangers triumphed over the Arizona Diamondbacks in a resounding 5-0 victory during Game 5, ultimately sealing the World Series with a 4-1 score. The Rangers continued their remarkable MLB postseason journey, maintaining an unblemished record of 11-0 on the road in a single postseason.
The MVP honor was claimed by Seager, joining the elite ranks as only the fourth player in MLB history to win multiple World Series MVP Awards, thanks to a series of clutch plays throughout the championship.
This postseason served as a testament to the significance of margins and decisive moments. Despite the Diamondbacks outpacing Texas in hits during the last two games, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, while the Rangers made the most of their chances, with players like Seager delivering pivotal home runs.
This theme persisted in Game 5 for Arizona for more than half of the contest. The Diamondbacks consistently had runners in scoring position up to the fifth inning, whereas the Rangers remained hitless through six innings, and yet the scoreboard remained deadlocked at 0-0.
In the fifth inning, starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi encountered trouble as the Diamondbacks loaded the bases, but he managed to escape without conceding any runs. Two innings later, Texas strung together three consecutive hits against the previously flawless Zac Gallen, eventually securing a run as Seager scored via Evan Carter’s RBI single to center.
Tensions mounted in the eighth inning when Texas loaded the bases against Kevin Ginkel, but the 29-year-old pitcher also managed to keep the opponents from scoring.
However, the ninth inning turned into a nightmare for Paul Sewald, as he allowed Texas to rally with three consecutive hits that brought in two runs. Jonah Heim’s single to center field brought home Josh Jung and Nathaniel Lowe after Alek Thomas crucially failed to field the ball.
Marcus Semien then stepped up and delivered a two-run homer, expanding the lead to 5-0. Arizona’s final inning concluded with two strikeouts and a foul out while Josh Sborz pitched for Texas. Everything that could have gone wrong…did.
The Texas Rangers made back-to-back appearances in the World Series in 2010 and 2011 but were unable to secure the championship. In 2011, they came agonizingly close, being just one strike away from victory on two separate occasions in Game 6 but ultimately losing that game and Game 7.
This time, despite the absence of star outfielder Adolis Garcia due to injury in Games 4 and 5, the Rangers rewrote their history.
Manager Bruce Bochy secured his fourth World Series title, with the previous three coming with the San Francisco Giants in the even-numbered years 2010, 2012, and 2014. He now stands as the fourth manager in history to achieve four World Series titles, marking his first championship with Texas in his inaugural season with the team.
Arizona’s last appearance in the World Series dates back to 2001 when they claimed their first title. However, after earning the moniker “Answerbacks” for their resilient performances leading up to the championship, the Diamondbacks were left without an answer for Texas’ clutch plays.
