By Oliver O’Connell and Joe Sommerlad | August 7, 2024, 8:08 AM GMT+7

PHILADELPHIA — Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz made their debut as running mates on Tuesday, rallying a crowd of over 12,000 at Temple University.

Taking the stage to roaring applause, Harris praised Walz’s Midwest roots and his background as a teacher, veteran, congressman, and governor. She highlighted his achievements, such as implementing free school lunches and protecting abortion rights.

“I set out to find a partner who can help build this brighter future,” Harris said, emphasizing the significance of Walz’s experience and values.

Walz delivered a passionate speech, mixing calls for bringing “joy” back to politics with sharp critiques of the GOP. He mocked Donald Trump and JD Vance as out-of-touch leaders who were “weird as hell” and dishonest about their connections to Project 2025. Walz also made a humorous reference to a well-known, NSFW rumor about Vance.

The rally saw Walz surpassing a competitive field of VP contenders, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who also appeared at the event. The dynamic duo’s appearance in Philadelphia, just 90 days before the election, set a combative tone for their campaign, underscoring their commitment to everyday American freedoms and values.
